How to change what the iPad volume buttons do

On an iPhone, the volume buttons always do the same thing: the upper one turns the volume up, the lower one turns it down. On an iPad, that is not necessarily true anymore. Since iPadOS 15.4, Apple lets the volume buttons adapt to how you hold the tablet — and you can switch this behavior on or off in Settings.

The feature is called dynamic volume buttons. When it is on, the button closest to the top of the iPad — in whatever orientation you are holding it — always raises the volume, and the other one lowers it. Rotate the iPad and the buttons effectively swap roles. If you prefer the classic fixed behavior, where each physical button always does the same thing, you can turn the dynamic mode off.

How to change what the volume buttons do

1. Open Settings → Sounds

Open the Settings app on your iPad and tap Sounds in the sidebar. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Sounds page — the volume button option lives there, below the ringer and alert sliders. Apple’s guide to adjusting the volume on iPad documents every sound setting on this screen if you want the full tour.

2. Find “Fixed Position Volume Controls”

At the bottom of the Sounds screen you will see a toggle labeled “Fixed Position Volume Controls”. This single switch controls the whole behavior. Note that it only appears on iPads that support both modes — more on that below.

3. Turn it off for dynamic buttons, on for classic

Toggle the switch OFF if you want dynamic volume buttons that follow the iPad’s orientation. Toggle it ON if you want the classic fixed behavior, where the buttons never change roles. The change takes effect immediately — no restart needed.

4. Rotate the iPad to test it

With dynamic mode on, hold the iPad in portrait and press the upper button, then rotate to landscape and press the new upper button — the volume should go up both times. If you grew up with fixed buttons, give the dynamic mode a day or two; most people find it more intuitive once muscle memory adapts.

5. Know which iPads always use dynamic buttons

On newer iPads — including iPad Pro with M4/M5, iPad Air with M2/M3, iPad mini (A17 Pro / 6th generation), and iPad 10th generation / A16 — the volume buttons are always dynamic and the toggle does not appear at all. The “Fixed Position Volume Controls” switch only shows up on older models running iPadOS 15.4 or later. MacRumors’ iPad guide keeps an up-to-date list of which models support what.

If it still doesn’t work

If the toggle is missing, your iPad either always uses dynamic buttons (newer models) or needs a software update: go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iPadOS. If the buttons feel unresponsive in general, a restart clears most temporary glitches. And if you enjoy tweaking Apple device sounds, you can also add and change the iPhone startup sound in iOS.

FAQ

Why don’t I see the “Fixed Position Volume Controls” toggle?

Two possibilities: your iPad is a newer model where dynamic buttons are mandatory and no toggle exists, or it is running an iPadOS version older than 15.4. Update iPadOS first; if the toggle still does not appear, your model uses dynamic buttons permanently.

Do dynamic volume buttons work in every app?

Yes — this is a system-level behavior, so it applies in every app, on the Home Screen, and on the Lock Screen. It is a small setting, but it changes how you interact with your iPad every single day. Pick the mode that matches your habits — dynamic for flexibility, fixed for predictability — and the volume buttons will finally do what you expect.
