Apple doesn’t let you pin arbitrary icons to the iPhone status bar — there’s no setting for it, and no App Store app can do it either. But there is a legitimate, built-in workaround: Focus modes. Since iOS 15, every Focus can display a custom icon in the status bar while it’s active. Pick any emoji and it sits right there at the top of your screen. No jailbreak, no sketchy profiles, no hacks. Here’s how to set it up.
Create a custom Focus with your icon
- Open Settings → Focus.
- Tap the + button in the top-right corner, then choose Custom.
- Give your Focus a name — anything you like; “Icon” works fine.
- Pick an icon and a color. You can choose from Apple’s symbols or any emoji — this is the icon that will appear in your status bar.
- Tap through the remaining setup screens to create the Focus.
Make sure the Focus doesn’t filter anything
A Focus normally silences notifications — but you can set it to silence nothing at all:
- Open your new Focus and tap People → choose Allow Notifications From → select Everyone.
- Tap Apps → Allow Notifications From → add all your apps.
- Turn off any Focus Filters and make sure no automatic schedule is set.
With everything allowed, the Focus changes nothing about how your phone behaves — it only shows the icon.
Turn it on and off
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner.
- Tap Focus and select your custom Focus.
- Your chosen icon now appears in the status bar, next to the clock.
- To remove it, open Control Center → Focus and switch the Focus off.
Apple documents Focus customization in Apple Support’s Focus guide, and 9to5Mac has covered creative Focus uses like this one.
Love customizing your iPhone’s look? You can also move your lock screen widgets down in iOS 26 and change Safari’s design on iPhone.
Tip: Create a few different Focus modes with different emoji — one for work, one for workouts, one for weekends. Switching between them from Control Center changes your status-bar icon to match what you’re doing, giving you an at-a-glance reminder of which mode you’re in.
If it still doesn’t work
If the icon disappears on its own, check for a Focus schedule or Smart Activation turning it off automatically — go to Settings → Focus → your Focus, scroll to “Turn on Automatically”, and delete any schedules. Also make sure a different Focus isn’t overriding it, since only one Focus can be active at a time.
FAQ
Will the icon stay in the status bar permanently?
No. The icon is only visible while the Focus is active. There is no way to pin an icon there permanently without jailbreaking, which we don’t recommend.
Does this require a jailbreak?
Not at all. This uses the official Focus feature built into iOS 15 and later — it’s fully supported by Apple.
Conclusion
While iOS won’t let you decorate the status bar directly, a do-nothing Focus mode with a custom emoji icon gets you remarkably close. Set it to allow everything, toggle it from Control Center whenever you want your icon showing, and enjoy a small touch of personalization Apple never intended — but fully allows.
