You updated to iOS 10, typed a birthday message, and tapped the new effects picker — but instead of balloons or confetti filling the screen, your chat just shows a flat line of text like “(sent with balloons)”. The animations are missing entirely. Before you blame the update, check one quiet setting: it almost certainly got carried over from your old iOS.
Why iMessage effects won’t animate
The culprit is the Reduce Motion accessibility setting. If it was switched on in your previous iOS version, the upgrade carries it straight into iOS 10 — and iOS 10’s full-screen and bubble effects refuse to play while Reduce Motion is active. That is exactly why you see a text label like “(sent with balloons)” instead of the animation itself. Turn it off and the effects come back to life.
Turn off Reduce Motion to restore effects
- Open Reduce Motion settings. Go to Settings → General → Accessibility → Reduce Motion, and toggle it OFF. Apple Support documents how Reduce Motion affects animations across the system.
- Restart the Messages app. Double-press the Home button, swipe Messages away to force-quit it, then reopen it so the new setting takes effect.
- Test with the effects picker. Open a conversation and long-press the blue send arrow — the iPhone 5S has no 3D Touch, so the long press opens the Send with effect screen. Pick a bubble or screen effect and send it.
- If effects are still missing. Sign out of iMessage (Settings → Messages) and sign back in, then hard-reset the iPhone by holding the Home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears. 9to5Mac covered these extra recovery steps when iMessage misbehaved in the first iOS 10 releases.
Good to know: Apple later added an “Auto-play Message Effects” toggle under Reduce Motion in iOS 10.1, so you could keep Reduce Motion on while still letting message effects play.
If it still doesn’t work
After disabling Reduce Motion and reopening Messages, send yourself a test message with a screen effect — it should now animate on both your iPhone and any synced devices. If Messages itself keeps acting up, you may also want to set up message sync between iPhone and Mac properly, or read how to permanently delete text messages from iPhone and iCloud to clear out stubborn conversation data.
FAQ
Why do iMessage effects only appear as text labels?
The effects are not broken — they are being suppressed. With Reduce Motion on, iOS replaces each animation with a plain-text description like “(sent with balloons)” so you still know what was sent. Switch Reduce Motion off and the real animations return.
Will turning off Reduce Motion change anything else on my iPhone?
Yes, but only cosmetically: it restores the parallax effect on the Home screen and the zoom transitions when opening apps. If you dislike those, iOS 10.1’s separate “Auto-play Message Effects” toggle lets you keep Reduce Motion on for everything else while still playing iMessage effects.
Wrapping up
iMessage effects that show only as text labels are not a bug — they are a side effect of Reduce Motion being carried over into iOS 10. Turn it off in Settings → General → Accessibility, reopen Messages, and your balloons, confetti and lasers will animate exactly as intended.
