What to do when the alarm vibration disappears on Apple Watch

You set an alarm on your Apple Watch, trusting the gentle tap on your wrist to wake you up — and then nothing happens. The screen lights up, the alarm fires, but the vibration that should nudge you awake is simply gone. It is a frustrating and surprisingly common problem, but in most cases it comes down to a software glitch in the watch–iPhone connection or a haptics setting that got flipped. Here is how to get the buzz back.

How to bring back alarm vibration, step by step

The most reliable fix is a two-part approach: refresh the pairing between the watch and the iPhone, then verify that haptics are actually working.

  1. Unpair your Apple Watch from the iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap the My Watch tab, then tap All Watches at the top. Tap the info button next to your watch and choose Unpair Apple Watch. Your iPhone automatically creates a backup of the watch first, so you will not lose your settings, faces, or health data.
  2. Pair the watch again. Hold your iPhone near the watch (or start pairing from the Watch app) and follow the on-screen steps, restoring from the backup you just made. This refresh clears the corrupted link state that usually kills alarm vibration.
  3. Check haptics on the watch. On the Apple Watch itself, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics. Make sure Haptic Alerts is turned on, and try the Prominent option, which adds an extra pre-tap before alerts. If you feel the test taps, the haptic engine is fine and the re-pairing did its job. This is also where you manage the taptic chime and hourly time announcements if you use them.
  4. Set a test alarm. Open the Alarms app on the watch, create an alarm one minute in the future, and wait. You should feel the taps. If the screen lights but nothing buzzes, repeat the unpair–pair cycle once more.

Re-pair the watch, then verify haptics under Settings → Sounds & Haptics.

If alerts misbehave in other ways — for example, notifications not reaching your wrist reliably — the same re-pairing trick often clears those up too, since most watch alert issues trace back to the Bluetooth link with the iPhone. Apple documents the official alarm controls in its Apple Watch alarms guide.

If it still doesn’t work

No vibration anywhere? If the watch never buzzes — not for alarms, calls, or messages — the haptic engine itself may be at fault. Restart the Apple Watch (hold the side button, swipe Power Off, then hold the side button again to turn it back on) and test haptics again in Settings → Sounds & Haptics.

Check Silent Mode and Do Not Disturb. Swipe up on the watch face to open Control Center. If the bell icon is red (Silent Mode) or the crescent moon is lit (Do Not Disturb), alerts may behave unexpectedly. Turn both off for your test.

Update watchOS. Apple has fixed several haptics bugs in past watchOS updates, as 9to5Mac has covered. On the iPhone, open the Watch app → General → Software Update and install anything pending, then re-test the alarm.

Frequently asked questions

Will unpairing my Apple Watch delete everything?

No. Unpairing automatically backs the watch up to your iPhone, including settings, watch faces, and health data. When you pair again you can restore that backup, so the process is safe — it just takes a few minutes.

Why did the vibration disappear in the first place?

Usually it is a corrupted pairing state between the watch and iPhone after an update or a failed sync. The haptic hardware is rarely the culprit, which is why re-pairing — not a repair shop — fixes it for most people.

A missing alarm buzz is annoying, but it is almost always a software hiccup rather than broken hardware. Unpair, re-pair, confirm haptics in Sounds & Haptics, and your wrist will be tapping you awake again.
