How to use Safari private browsing mode in iOS 15

iOS 15 redesigned Safari from the ground up — and in the process, moved Private Browsing to a place many users can’t find. If you’re tapping around looking for the old “Private” button and coming up empty, you’re not alone. Here’s where it went, and the three ways to open a private tab.

Private Browsing doesn’t save your visited pages, search history, or AutoFill information — and it doesn’t keep cross-site tracker statistics either. It’s perfect for gift shopping, shared devices, or anything you don’t want in your history. Apple’s guide to Private Browsing on iPhone covers the official steps.

Three ways to open a private tab in iOS 15

1. Long-press the Safari icon (from the Home Screen)

The fastest way. Long-press the Safari app icon on your Home Screen, then tap “New Private Tab.” Safari opens straight into private mode — no in-app navigation needed.

2. Long-press the Tabs button (inside Safari)

Open Safari, then long-press the Tabs button (the two overlapping squares, bottom-right). A menu appears — tap “New Private Tab.” This is the in-app equivalent of the Home Screen shortcut.

3. Via tab groups

Tap the Tabs button, then tap the tab-group button showing your open-tabs count (it says something like “5 Tabs” or “Start Page”). Choose “Private” from the list. This switches your entire tab view to the private group. 9to5Mac’s iPhone guide has screenshots of the redesigned iOS 15 Safari if you want visuals.

4. How to tell you’re browsing privately

You’ll know private mode is active when the address/search bar turns dark instead of white or light grey. The tab overview also labels the group as private, and your private tabs stay separated from regular tabs. If the bar is light, you’re in normal mode.

5. How to exit private mode

Repeat method 2 or 3 and switch back to a regular tab group (like “Start Page” or a named group). Your private tabs stay available in the Private group until you close them — switching away doesn’t delete them, it just hides them from view.

If it still doesn’t work

If the “Private” option doesn’t appear at all, check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions — private browsing can be disabled there. Also note that private tabs don’t sync via iCloud, and some websites may behave differently without cookies. For more Safari customization, see how to change Safari’s design on iPhone.

FAQ

Does private browsing hide me from my ISP or employer?

No. Private Browsing only stops Safari from saving history, cookies, and AutoFill on YOUR device. Your internet provider, employer, and the websites themselves can still see your activity. For real network-level privacy, you need a VPN.

Why did Apple move private mode in iOS 15?

iOS 15 introduced tab groups, and Private became just another group rather than a separate mode toggle. It’s actually more flexible — you can keep multiple tab groups plus a dedicated Private group. While you’re in Safari’s settings, learn how to stop Safari from suggesting passwords for websites, and if you’re cleaning house, see which built-in iPhone apps you can delete.

iOS 15’s Safari redesign buried private mode, but now you know all three ways to find it. Long-press for speed, tab groups for organization — and the dark address bar tells you you’re private.
