How to teach Siri your family relationships

Saying “call my brother” to Siri only works if Siri knows who your brother is. Out of the box, Apple’s assistant has no idea how the people in your contacts relate to you — but teaching it takes less than a minute, either by voice or by editing your own contact card. Once set, relationship-aware commands work everywhere Siri does.

1. Tell Siri who you are first

Siri can only attach relationships to a contact it recognizes as you. Open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (on older iOS versions: Settings → Siri) and check that “My Information” points at your own contact card. If it is blank, tap it and pick yourself from your contacts. While you are personalizing Siri, you might also like how to automatically identify songs playing nearby on iPhone — another hands-free trick worth knowing.

2. Teach Siri by voice

The fastest method is simply telling Siri. Hold the side button (or say “Hey Siri”) and say, for example, “John Smith is my brother.” Siri will show the contact it found and ask you to confirm the relationship — confirm it. Repeat for the labels you use most: mother, father, wife, husband, daughter, son, partner. Apple documents this flow in its Siri help pages (Apple Support).

3. Remove or change a relationship

Made a mistake, or the relationship changed? Just say “John Smith is not my brother” and confirm when Siri asks. Siri drops the label immediately, and you can teach it a new one the same way. No settings menus to dig through.

4. Set relationships manually in Contacts

Prefer tapping to talking? Open your own contact card in the Contacts app, tap Edit, then “Add related name.” Choose a label (brother, mother, assistant and more), pick the contact, and tap Done. This edits the same data Siri reads, so voice commands and manual entries stay in sync. MacRumors has noted this method is the reliable fallback when the voice setup misfires.

Once a few key relationships are saved, try them across different apps: “Text my wife I’ll be late,” “Call Mom on speaker,” or “Remind me to call Dad at 6.” Siri resolves the relationship first and then routes the request — the same labels work in Phone, Messages, and Reminders, which is what makes the one-time setup pay off every day.

If it still doesn’t work

If Siri still claims not to know someone, check three things: your own contact card is selected under My Information; the contact’s name is spelled the way you pronounce it; and Siri is enabled under Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. A quick restart of the phone clears the occasional stuck state.

FAQ

Can Siri learn nicknames too?

Yes. Say “Call John Smith ‘Johnny'” and confirm when Siri asks — Siri will then respond to the nickname as well as the full name.

Do relationships sync across my devices?

Yes. Related names live in your own contact card, which syncs through iCloud — so your iPad and Mac pick up the same relationships automatically.

Two minutes of setup turns “call my brother” from a command that fails into the fastest way to reach the people who matter. And for more ways to keep your devices behaving the way you like, see how to turn off AirPods charging case sounds.
