How to export a PDF from iBooks on iPhone

You saved a PDF into the Books app on your iPhone — a manual, a boarding pass, a scanned contract — and now you need it somewhere else: attached to an email, dropped into Files, or sent to your Mac. Although Apple renamed iBooks to simply Books years ago, the export process is the same and takes less than a minute once you know where the Share button hides.

1. Open the PDF in the Books app

  1. Open the Books app on your iPhone. (Older guides call it iBooks; it is the same orange app.)
  2. Tap Library at the bottom, then switch to the PDFs collection if your library is large.
  3. Tap the PDF you want to export so it opens in the reader.

2. Share the PDF to Files, email or AirDrop

  1. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow) in the reader toolbar. On some iOS versions you may need to tap once in the middle of the page to reveal the toolbar first.
  2. Choose a destination from the share sheet: Save to Files to store it in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, Mail or Messages to send it to someone, or AirDrop to beam it to a nearby Mac or iPad.
  3. If you pick Save to Files, choose a folder and tap Save. The PDF is now a regular file you can attach anywhere.

The share sheet is the fastest route for almost everyone. If you regularly move documents between your phone and computer, you may also like our guide on measuring iPhone-to-Mac data transfer speed over cable to pick the quickest connection.

3. Copy the PDF via a computer as an alternative

  1. Connect the iPhone to your computer with a cable and trust the computer if asked.
  2. On a Mac, open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar, then open the Files tab and look for the Books section.
  3. On Windows, open iTunes or the Apple Devices app, select the iPhone, open File Sharing, and choose Books.
  4. Drag the PDF from the Books documents list to a folder on your computer.

Apple walks through the Books library sync options on Apple Support if your PDFs are not appearing where you expect them.

4. Know the DRM limitation before you start

This is the important caveat: you can only export PDFs you added to Books. Ebooks purchased from the Book Store are protected by DRM and cannot be shared, emailed or copied out — the Share button will be missing or limited for those titles. iMore has covered this distinction for years: your own files are yours to move freely, but store-bought books stay locked to your Apple ID.

If it still doesn’t work

If the Share button does nothing, force-quit the Books app and reopen the PDF. If a PDF you added yourself refuses to appear, check that iCloud Drive syncing for Books is enabled under Settings → [your name] → iCloud. For a broader sync check, see how to set up message sync between iPhone and Mac — the same iCloud account plumbing applies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a purchased ebook from the Book Store as a PDF?

No. Purchased ebooks are DRM-protected and tied to your Apple ID, so Books will not let you share or copy them out. Only PDFs and files you added yourself can be exported.

Where do exported PDFs go when I use Save to Files?

Wherever you choose in the Files picker — iCloud Drive for access on all your devices, or On My iPhone to keep it local. Pick iCloud Drive if you want the PDF to show up on your Mac automatically.

Conclusion

Exporting a PDF from Books is a two-tap job: open the document, hit Share, and pick Files, Mail or AirDrop. Reserve the cable-and-Finder route for bulk copies, and remember the DRM rule — your own PDFs travel freely, store purchases do not.
