What to do when iPhone shows a ‘Weak Security’ Wi-Fi warning

Open Settings → Wi-Fi on your iPhone and you might notice a small but alarming label under your network name: “Weak Security.” Your connection still works, so what does it mean — and should you worry?

The short answer: your iPhone is telling you that your Wi-Fi router uses outdated encryption. Since iOS 14, Apple flags networks that don’t meet modern security standards. The connection works, but your traffic could potentially be intercepted. Apple’s recommended Wi-Fi router settings explain exactly what your network should use.

How to fix the Weak Security warning

1. Understand what triggered it

The warning appears when your router uses WEP, WPA (TKIP), or WPA2 with TKIP — encryption standards that are now considered insecure. Modern networks should use WPA3 Personal, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional, or at minimum WPA2 Personal (AES).

2. Open your router’s admin panel

Access your router through its companion app, or type its IP address (often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into a browser. Log in with the admin credentials — they’re often printed on a sticker on the router itself.

3. Switch to WPA2 or WPA3

In the wireless security settings, change the security mode to WPA3 Personal. If some of your older devices don’t support WPA3, choose WPA2/WPA3 Transitional (or WPA2 Personal with AES). Avoid WEP, WPA, or any option mentioning TKIP. Save the settings.

4. Keep the network name simple

While you’re in the router settings, make sure your network name (SSID) uses plain English letters and numbers — no special characters, no emoji. Don’t hide the SSID either; hidden networks cause more problems than they solve. 9to5Mac’s iPhone guide has more on how iOS handles Wi-Fi networks.

5. Turn off MAC address filtering

If your router uses MAC-address filtering (an allowlist of permitted devices), turn it off or update it. iOS rotates a private MAC address for privacy, which conflicts with strict filtering and can cause mysterious connection drops.

6. Save your old settings, reboot, reconnect

Before making changes, screenshot or note your original settings in case something breaks. After saving, reboot the router, then on your iPhone go to Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the network name, and reconnect. The “Weak Security” label should be gone.

If it still doesn’t work

On networks you don’t control — office, café, hotel — you can’t change the router settings yourself. Contact the network administrator and point them to Apple’s recommended settings. In the meantime, avoid sensitive transactions on that network, or use your iPhone as a hotspot instead. Here’s how to set up automatic hotspot connection from iPhone on Mac.

FAQ

Is a “Weak Security” network dangerous?

Not immediately — your connection still works, and most traffic (especially to HTTPS sites) is encrypted anyway. But outdated Wi-Fi encryption is easier to crack, so someone nearby could theoretically intercept unencrypted traffic. It’s worth fixing, but it’s not an emergency.

Will changing router settings disconnect my other devices?

Possibly, briefly. After changing the security mode, devices need to reconnect — most do automatically. Very old devices that only support WEP may not connect to WPA2/WPA3 at all; that’s a sign they need replacing. For staying connected across your Apple devices meanwhile, learn how to set up message sync between iPhone and Mac.

The “Weak Security” warning looks scary, but it’s really just your iPhone nudging you to modernize your router. One five-minute settings change, and it’s gone for good.
