Picture-in-picture is one of the iPhone’s handiest tricks: start a video, swipe up, and it shrinks into a floating window that keeps playing while you text, browse, or check email. It works beautifully in Safari and most video apps — so it’s baffling when YouTube refuses to cooperate. If the video just stops instead of popping out, the cause is almost always one of a handful of settings. Here’s how to get YouTube PiP working again.
First, the big one: YouTube Premium is required
On iPhone, picture-in-picture inside the official YouTube app is a Premium feature. Without an active YouTube Premium subscription, the app simply won’t offer PiP — swiping up pauses the video instead. This is YouTube’s policy, not an iPhone limitation: PiP works fine in Safari and other apps with no subscription at all. YouTube documents its Premium features in its help center.
To check your status, open the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then go to Purchases and memberships and confirm Premium is active. Just as important: make sure you’re signed into the Google account that actually holds the subscription. Being logged into the wrong profile is one of the most common reasons PiP “suddenly stops working.”
Update iOS and the YouTube app
Picture-in-picture needs iOS 14 or later. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install anything pending — Apple’s iPhone support pages have the full walkthrough if you need it. Then open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and update the YouTube app. Google has fixed several PiP-breaking bugs over the years, and an outdated app is a classic culprit.
If updating doesn’t help, delete the YouTube app entirely and reinstall it from the App Store, then sign back into your Premium Google account. A clean install clears corrupted cached data that an in-place update sometimes leaves behind.
Check both picture-in-picture toggles
Two separate switches control PiP, and both need to be on:
- Open Settings → General → Picture in Picture on your iPhone and turn on Start PiP Automatically. If it’s already on, toggle it off, wait a few seconds, and toggle it back on — this resets the system-level PiP service.
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture → Settings → General, and make sure the Picture-in-picture toggle is enabled there too.
Now test it: play any video, then swipe up to go home or tap the PiP icon. The video should shrink into a floating window you can drag around and resize with a pinch. (If you find automatic PiP more annoying than useful, we have a separate guide on turning off automatic picture-in-picture on iPhone and iPad.)
If it still doesn’t work
Try a different video first — a small number of videos, typically music content, are restricted from PiP by the uploader or label, and no setting will override that. If the problem affects every video, restart your iPhone; it clears the media services PiP depends on. Also glance at Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions, which can block PiP in rare configurations. MacRumors has tracked several PiP quirks across iOS updates if you want to dig deeper.
Frequently asked questions
Is YouTube picture-in-picture free on iPhone?
No. Inside the official YouTube app, PiP requires a YouTube Premium subscription. Watching YouTube in Safari follows the standard iOS rules instead, where PiP is available without Premium.
Why does PiP work in Safari but not the YouTube app?
They’re governed by different rules. Safari uses Apple’s system-wide PiP, which works for any compatible video. The YouTube app layers its own policy on top, and that policy reserves background PiP for Premium members.
Conclusion
Nine times out of ten, broken YouTube PiP on iPhone comes down to one of three things: no Premium subscription, an outdated app, or a disabled toggle. Work through the checks above in order and you’ll have that floating video window back within minutes.
